Final Year Project

My Final year project is named California Dream'in. The lyrical theme of this album is about chasing dreams. Sonically, I was wondering what if I was born 20 years earlier. So, I decided to combine past music styles with modern music production in this project. In this album, I made a dream pop and a synth-pop/dance pop, both genres were popular in the 70s-90s.
California Dream’in is a song about missing a friend that went overseas to pursue his dream, The beginning starts with a VHS insert sound effect. To create the dream pop feeling, a lot of reverb is used to make the song sound dreamy and reflect the distance between me and my friend.
Better Day is a dance-pop and synth-pop-influenced song, taking arrangement references from early EDM songs. I used a lot of synthesizer sound on the tracks, the bass is arpeggiated and carries the rhythm, add I added layers of classic synthesizer sounds in the chorus.
Here are the two songs:

Reflective Report
I learned about layering different sounds together, the synth in the chorus was originally pretty “thin”, so I doubled the track and make it one octave lower, then I added another synth sound to add more dynamics in the mid frequencies. I send them all to a bus and added distortion. I think this is a useful trick that I could use in future works.
I also learned to use frequency visualizer. I used it to see what frequencies the tracks occupies, so I can carve out space for other tracks that occupy the same frequency. I also use it to identify what frequencies could I add more to make the songs more “full” or interesting.
Little things can also add up and add movement to the songs, for example, the pad in California Dream’in has a slight panning, the bass in Better Day has a filter, and the chorus on the synth also add changes to the song.
